The three types of men – inferior, mediocre, and excellent

Man is to be known in three ways:

Inferior, mediocre and excellent.

Inferior:

The person of small scope is

One who, in one’s own interest,

Acts for worldly pleasures only.

The person of mediocre scope:

One who is indifferent to the pleasure

Of life and nature and is opposed to sinful acts,

And acts for oneself alone, that is,

He is concerned with his own enlightenment alone.

He/she is depressed in his mind by watching the

Sufferings of the world, and always practices the three

Great transcendences of moral discipline,

Of meditative concentration, and of wisdom

In order to rid the sufferings of cyclic existence.

He/she wishes to get the calm and happiness for his own self.

The person of excellent scope:

One who always wishes to remove all the sufferings (darkness)

Of others by his own suffering

Is the person of great scope.

He has the capacity of attaining supreme enlightenment

So that he is able to work for the benefit of all sentient beings.
